God sets the standard for generosity. By nature, God gives. And not just enough. He gives abundantly, lavishly, extravagantly!

Why is generosity important to God?
When God rescued His people from slavery in Egypt, He led them to “a land flowing with milk and honey” (Ex. 3:8). And this doesn’t mean literal rivers of sticky honey. Instead, it points to the fact that God doesn’t just give us what we need. He also longs to provide for our deepest desires, beyond our greatest hopes.
Other verses about God’s generosity
Ephesians 1:3 says,
“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places.”
And if you keep reading Ephesians chapter 1, these blessings include adopting us, making us holy, and promising us an inheritance. He has given us redemption, forgiveness, endless grace, and the personal presence of the indwelling Holy Spirit. And on and on….
When Jesus arrived at the wedding in Cana and his friends’ family ran out of wine, he didn’t just meet their basic need for something to drink. He displayed an example of generosity for us and miraculously supplied the best, most delicious wine in abundance!
And Jesus’ first miracle was so unusually generous that the master of the wedding feast exclaimed,
“Everyone serves the good wine first, and when people have drunk freely, then the poor wine. But you have kept the good wine until now” (John 2:10).
Above all, let’s not forget about God’s generosity expressed through the eternal inheritance waiting for us on the other side of resurrection. First Peter 1:3-5 shares this amazing truth:
“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you, who by God’s power are being guarded through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.”
