Jesus didn’t get frustrated often. But this time, He did! In fact, He rebuked the disciples for thinking He didn’t have time for the children. But He did! He loved, embraced, blessed and held them up as an example to follow… an example of childlike faith.
Mark 10:13–16 captures the scene: “And they were bringing children to him that he might touch them, and the disciples rebuked them. But when Jesus saw it, he was indignant and said to them, ‘Let the children come to me; do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of God. Truly, I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a child shall not enter it.’ And he took them in his arms and blessed them, laying his hands on them.”
Childlike Faith
In Mark 10:13–16, we see Jesus’ deep concern for children. Sadly, when parents brought their children to Him, His disciples shooed them away, thinking Jesus was too busy for such distractions. But Jesus responded with compassion. He embraced them. And I imagine all the kids melted in His arms, absolutely confident that He loved them.
Then, Jesus held these kids up as an example of simple trust and complete dependence—two qualities His kingdom requires. He explained to the adults in the crowd that unless they received the kingdom of God like a little child, they could not enter it.
This passage calls us to reflect on childlike faith—humble, trusting and completely dependent on God. In the same way, Jesus calls us to approach Him with that same dependence, surrendering our pride and self-sufficiency. The kingdom of God is not for the powerful or self-reliant, but for those who recognize their need for God and trust Him completely.
Jesus also teaches us to value and welcome others, especially the vulnerable. Just as He welcomed the children, we are called to love and serve those around us with compassion and openness. Today, let us approach God with the humility of a child, trusting in His unconditional love and provision.
